Munching Cheetos and Cheeto Mussolini
Chicago's homicide rate is high. It's hard to know current figures, but in 2016 it was about 24 per 100,000. The last time the nationwide average was that high was around 1776. When this kind of Federal action would have been spat on.
The nationwide average homicide rate has been about 5-6 per 100,000 the past few years, down from a high point in the 80's and 90's of about 10-11 per 100,000.
Violent and property crime has fallen nationwide for the past 2 decades as well. We have been safer. But peaks are historically associated with economic distress and that is certainly the case in America today. As my husband says, crime is an economic problem, and when white markets fail, black markets rise and the associated crime rises with them.
Even if people are financially ok, many are suffering mental health impacts due to job loss and shutdowns. All of this is to say, a rise in crime should be expected.

But back to Chicago and Federal intervention. No one is saying that the crime problem isn't bad. The homicide rate is terrible. But if that same rate didn't warrant Federal intervention in the past, why should it today?

Is it really that was have become such a safety obsessed society that we are willing to sacrifice everything for the myth of perfect safety?
It sure is funny that ya'll are still eating Cheetos and drinking Mountain Dew (heart disease deaths about 165 per 100,000) while you cheer Donald Trump's crack-down nationalism in the name of safety. People are really bad at statistics. Or just really good at nationalism. Probably both. Cheeto Mussolini being cheered on by the Cheeto munching crowd. Awesome.

Currently drinking: Berkey water with a teaspoon of my homemade electrolyte powder and lemon juice.
For homemade electrolyte powder, mix equal parts Redmond Real Salt, Bone Meal Calcium, NoSalt (potassium) and Magnesium Citrate in a jar and shake until evenly combined. Use approximately 1/2-1 tsp per liter. This little jar is a pain to make but will last months and is so much better than Gatorade and ideal for keeping your electrolytes in check if you are on a ketogenic diet (like me!)
