Chicago's homicide rate is high. It's hard to know current figures, but in 2016 it was about 24 per 100,000. The last time the nationwide average was that high was around 1776. When this kind of Federal action would have been spat on. The nationwide average homicide rate has been about 5-6 per 100,000 the past few years, down from a high point in the 80's and 90's of about 10-11 per 100,000. Violent and property crime has fallen nationwide for the past 2 decades as well. We have been safer. But peaks are historically associated with economic distress and that is certainly the case in America today. As my husband says, crime is an economic problem, and when white markets fail, black markets rise and the associated crime rises with them. Even if people are financially ok, many are suffering mental health impacts due to job loss and shutdowns. All of this is to say, a rise in crime should be expected. It's a scary picture and it is certainly more convenient to ignore. How in the world do we double the balance sheet and not have dramatic inflation within a year? And as we should know, inflation hurts the poor disproportionately . It has been frustrating to hear so many lament the "focus on the economy at the expense of lives" when truly they are one and the same. I highly recommend the always doomsday Peter Schiff talking about the coming bubble burst on a recent episode of the Joe Rogan Experience (Bonus he gives a shoutout to the Jo Jorgensen campaign) Ultimately who is going to be hurt the worst? Not just the American poor, but the poor worldwide. According to a recent repo...
