Chicago's homicide rate is high. It's hard to know current figures, but in 2016 it was about 24 per 100,000. The last time the nationwide average was that high was around 1776. When this kind of Federal action would have been spat on. The nationwide average homicide rate has been about 5-6 per 100,000 the past few years, down from a high point in the 80's and 90's of about 10-11 per 100,000. Violent and property crime has fallen nationwide for the past 2 decades as well. We have been safer. But peaks are historically associated with economic distress and that is certainly the case in America today. As my husband says, crime is an economic problem, and when white markets fail, black markets rise and the associated crime rises with them. Even if people are financially ok, many are suffering mental health impacts due to job loss and shutdowns. All of this is to say, a rise in crime should be expected. Risk risk, RISK and princess water

In a huge Covid America faux-pas, I went on vacation this weekend with all seven of my siblings. it was beautiful and fun and 100% worth the risk. I ended up showing my smart, progressive, corporate accountant brother the increase in the Federal balance sheet, and it was news to him. It's a scary picture and it is certainly more convenient to ignore. How in the world do we double the balance sheet and not have dramatic inflation within a year? And as we should know, inflation hurts the poor disproportionately . It has been frustrating to hear so many lament the "focus on the economy at the expense of lives" when truly they are one and the same. I highly recommend the always doomsday Peter Schiff talking about the coming bubble burst on a recent episode of the Joe Rogan Experience (Bonus he gives a shoutout to the Jo Jorgensen campaign) Ultimately who is going to be hurt the worst? Not just the American poor, but the poor worldwide. According to a recent repo...

What if viruses were a software update?

Could we imagine viruses as information meant to give us "updates" to our software? Politics and Tea 2.0

A "return" to blogging. Not that I wrote much to begin with, but a return nonetheless. It must happen. Because, dang it, I just have a lot to say, and I'm just sure that people out there HAVE to hear it, haha. So watch out, friends. Instead of floating around in my head as incoherent little snippets, my ideas can get developed into big-girl thoughts. Expect to find various rants about government stupidity; that's a given, if you know me at all. But also about medical stupidity, health stupidity, birth stupidity, and really anything that involves experts that are really just people who stayed in college and partied more than you and I and then have the audacity to stick letter behind their name and expect you to listen to them, often with a gun threatening you otherwise. I don't really like those people. But I love me some Jesus. And he loves those people. So even though I don't like them I will try to love them and pray for them. And love you too. No real jud...

Your meaning of national security, their meaning of National Security

Those in power- from the White House to the war fetishers at the Heritage Foundation and the American Enterprise Institute , are up in arms at another “leak” by Wikileaks, saying that the leak of these documents is a breech of federal law and must be punished. Julian Assange, the effective leader of Wikileaks, is being called a “partisan left-wing terror-apologist” by typical right-wingers who think everything is a partisan fight. From all sides the fiasco is being called an irresponsible endangerment of “National Security”. “National Security” is the phrase evoked by the ruling class and those who listen to them as justification for the violation of rights in this situation and many others. The misunderstanding of this term is what I believe is standing in the way of many otherwise critical individuals from critiquing the State’s actions. When most people contemplate the term “National Security”, they imagine it to mean something along the lines of the protection of and ulti...

Amazing Healthy Zucchini Pancakes

So I came across this recipe this morning from GreenStyleMom and was very skeptical. All previous experiments with whole grain, or even just homemade pancakes have been pretty dismal failures. Inedible, typically. But these pancakes were an amazing exception. Lucy ate 3 of them. Moses ate a couple with glee. Healthy, with vegetable and whole grain and my kids are eating them? Yes. Of course, it helps that there was syrup on top, but I'm sure next time when I top them with just applesauce, they will still get eaten. Considering we are facing a summer where, if last summer is any indication, we will have more zucchini than I could possibly know what to do with. Good thing I have a deep freezer, and of course the zucchini I used to make these pancakes was frozen shredded that is still lingering in the freezer from our abundant harvest last year. Whole Grain Zucchini Pancakes 1/2 cup rolled oats 1 tbsp of wheat germ 1 tbsp ground flax seed 1 tbsp brown sugar 1/2 cup whole wheat flour ...
